Shiovham, Sapta and live music from violinist Rohan Roy made for an electric evening at Pavilion Dance South West in November.
Our dancers had a fantastic time sharing our touring Shivoham and Sapta productions, alongside Indian fusion violinist Rohan Roy, performances from our youth and community groups and additional demonstrations from Pavilion Dance’s Bollywood class and local youth dance group, Ek Dantaya.
Kala The Arts presents Shivoham
Shivoham is a collaboration with choreography by our Artistic Director Sushmita Pati and music composer Rohan Roy. Combining dance and live music, this presentation is a visual feast of colour and elaborate costumes, inspired by the aura of Shiva the dancer with flowing fabric, creating the movement of the Ganges river.
Kala The Arts presents Sapta
Sapta is a creative exploration to find the beauty of music through movement, that uplifts moods and helps healing. Choreography is inspired by Surya the Sun God, in all his glory and the artists take the audience on a musical journey to stir and invigorate the soul. The movement is based on the different ways energy flows, leading to a crescendo.
This Kala performance attracted an impressive new audience for Pavilion Dance South West, with 48% of the audience visiting the venue for the first time.
“What a joy it was to experience the art of Indian Classical Dance at Pavilion Dance South West. Kala The Arts presented an evening of dance workshops, fusion dancing, beautiful Odissi Bharatnatyam to a delighted audience!
Sushmita Pati, with whom I had the privilege of starting my Odissi journey during the Covid-19 Pandemic, weaved an enriching tapestry of artefacts from Indian culture.
The word culture is often used very loosely in the vernacular to represent food, music, festivals. Whilst these are beautiful artefacts, they represent values and beliefs.
Performing arts rejuvenates the soul, has proven benefits for physical and mental health and helps build community action. Although my journey in dancing has had numerous pauses due to life in general, since childhood, dance has been a way of life for me and one that has seen me through many challenges. It makes my soul joyful. This is an appreciation post to all those who further arts in the community and especially to my guru, Sushmita Pati.”
